Comprehensive Miyakejima Island Nature Exhibit
Creatures that Live Together on the Volcanic Island
July 16 (Sat.) through September 26 (Mon.)
Residents have returned to Miyakejima Island for the first time since the volcanic eruption four and a half years ago and they are working to restore the island. This exhibit will introduce various creatures that live together with people on the island, which is surrounded by the sea and is rich in the wonders of nature.
Akakokko
(Turdus Celaenops) (Panel Exhibit only)
Like the tsugumi dusky thrush, this bird measures about 23 cm. This uniquely Japanese variety can only be found on the Izu Islands and the Nansei Islands and is a national natural treasure.
Akahara-yakko
(Centropyge Ferrugata)
Although, all akahara-yakko are female at the time of birth, they change into male at adulthood, and turn bright red like kinchakudai (Bluelined Angelfish).
Nekozame
(Heterodontus Japonicus)
This bullhead shark has large thorn-like protrusions in front of the dorsal fin and its strong teeth can crush even sazae turban top shell clams. The face looks somewhat like a cats.
Tora-utsubo
(Muraena Pardalis)
Measuring about 90 cm long, this moray eel has tiger-like stripes. The head has two horn-like protrusions and you can see sharp teeth coming out of its curved mouth.
Ishidai
(Oplegnathus Fasciatus)
This fish is famous for the horizontal-stripe pattern it has while it is young. It prefers rocky areas, and bites clams with its strong, beak-like teeth.
In addition, the aquarium has a Penguin Land section, a renovated Water Tunnel and a Shark Hall. You can also enjoy dolphin shows and sea lion shows. Dont miss this opportunity to see the power of these creatures with your own eyes. |
