10 Rules to Keep in Mind If an Earthquake Strikes

1 First of all, protect yourself.
Your life is the most important thing of all, so first protect yourself.

2 Turn off all sources of heat.
Calmly turn off all sources of heat, such as appliances for cooking and heating.

3 Secure an exit by opening a door.
Concrete buildings, particularly condominiums, tend to tilt, making it impossible to open the door.

4 If a fire breaks out, try to extinguish it first.
Shout “Kaji da (Fire)!” to alert your neighbors and ask for their help in extinguishing the fire during its early stages.

5 Do not panic when escaping outside.
Be careful of falling items, such as glass panes and signs, and take action calmly.

6 Do not go near gates or walls.
When outside, be careful of structures and other items that may collapse or topple over, such as block walls and automatic vending machines.

7 Cooperate with each other when conducting rescue and first aid activities.
Check on the elderly, the disabled and the injured and be willing to help each other.

8 Conduct a safety check before evacuating.
When evacuating, switch off the electric circuit breaker and shut off the main gas valve.

9 Evacuate on foot, and carry a minimum of belongings.
Evacuate on foot to the designated evacuation site. Do not use your car or motorcycle.

10 Follow official announcements.
Listen to accurate information on the radio or TV, and do not be influenced by rumors or hearsay.
