Discovering the Attractive Qualities of Shinagawa!
The Oi area features commercial facilities, hotels, cultural facilities and high-rise condominiums. Oi-machi Station is the closest station to the Shinagawa City Office, making this area the center of the city. In this issue, we describe places to see near the city office.
Shinagawa Disaster Prevention Experience Hall
The Shinagawa Theater, located on the second floor of the Disaster Prevention Center in the Shinagawa City Office, celebrated its reopening in March 2016 as the Shinagawa Disaster Prevention Experience Hall.
Using the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake, this hall tells people what to do during a disaster, provides training in disaster prevention skills, and raises awareness about disaster prevention with the goal of surviving disasters. You can pick up valuable knowledge from various exhibits and videos, while other sections allow you to gain hands-on experience practicing first-stage firefighting and how to support people who need assistance during an evacuation.
The risk of a major earthquake crisis exists in Tokyo as well. The hall is also open on Sundays so that as many city residents as possible can visit, and there are multilingual services—such as in English, Chinese and Korean—in addition to Japanese. Why not take the time to learn more about disaster prevention?

Shinagawa Chuo Park
This park is located in the center of the city, across the street from the city office building. There are sports facilities (with a multipurpose plaza and tennis courts available for a fee), as well as a plaza with a fountain, a stream and rock garden, a trim plaza with athletic equipment and another plaza for children next to city resident housing. The sports facilities are equipped with lights, so you can use the area at night as well. A running course circles around the multipurpose plaza, with one lap measuring 287 meters. This course can be used free of charge.
Seasonal flowers are planted within the park. During this time of year, the hydrangeas are particularly beautiful.

Flowers of June
June is rainy season here in Japan. We can enjoy such flowers as hydrangeas and iris even though the air is very damp. In Shinagawa City, hydrangeas are in bloom at Shinagawa Chuo Park, Oi-suijin Park, Ikedayama Park and Togoshi Park, while you can see iris at Bunko-no-mori. |
