Promote a Sustainable Society to Ensure
Our Sustainable Future
Garbage If Burned…Recyclable If Sorted
Do you lead a life in which producing a lot of garbage and frequently disposing of items is a natural way of life?
To keep the spirit of mottainai (don’t be wasteful) in mind and develop a truly sustainable society, we need to promote these “three R” activities: (1) reduce the amount of garbage and recyclable resources at the source; (2) reuse items whenever possible; and (3) recycle items as recyclable resources.
Of the three Rs, “reduce” and “reuse” are particularly important.
Let’s make reducing garbage and reusing items an integral part of our everyday lifestyles.
● Efforts to Reduce Garbage—Minimize It at the Source
• Try not to buy items you do not need and disposable items
• Do not waste food
• Eat emergency food before the expiration dates and buy only the necessary amount
• Use your own bottle for beverages, and bring your own shopping bag when grocery shopping and your own chopsticks for eating out
• Use refillable products
● Reusing Items—Use Items until They Wear Out
• Repair broken items and continue using them
• Buy used items at recycling shops and flea markets
• Take the initiative to use recycled products
• Reuse items in creative ways
If you have to throw things away, carefully sort those that can be reused as recyclable resources. Sorting garbage and recyclable resources facilitates the rebirth of items as new products instead of creating garbage, and is a key to building a sustainable society.
