This Month’s Special Feature Canola flowers
When Japanese people hear nanohana (the Japanese word for canola flowers), they often picture bright yellow flowers blooming in the fields in spring. Canola is a generic term for plants in the Brassicaceae family; their flowers appear similar, but there are various types. Depending on the type, the flowers can be processed to produce certain oils. People also enjoy eating these flowers as a familiar spring food in Japan. You can see superb canola flowers along the the Shinagawa Hanakaido in Shinagawa City (Higashi-Oi 1- and 2-chome and Katsushima 1-chome).
