Shinagawa City prospered as the first post town on the former Tokaido Road in the old days, and now it serves as Tokyo’s front entrance, a town where both newness and nostalgia exist in harmony. The city has many attractions, including shopping streets overflowing with old-fashioned downtown atmosphere, colorful parks, and night views of high-rise buildings. Behind all these attractions are city residents who poured their energy into the revitalization and its lively atmosphere. A web magazine called Tsunago Shinagawa (Let’s Connect Shinagawa) was launched last year to spotlight such residents and convey the charms and energy of Shinagawa City and its people. It describes the connections that go beyond the boundaries of generations and communities as well as the deep appeal of each community. Please read it! In this issue, we spotlight 2 issues.
Toshio Shima, chairperson
The Shinagawa City Shopping Streets Joint Association is composed of 67 of the 104 shopping streets of Shinagawa City (as of March 2019). Shopping streets represent one of Shinagawa City’s major points of appeal, and the association conducts research on the need to enliven these areas.
Katsushige Tanji, chairperson of Shinagawa City Town Council & Resident Association Federation/Yashio Resident Association Federation
Yashio―a community blessed with rich greenery and plenty of waterways―did not have shopping streets, shrines or temples, and social connections among the community were relatively weak when the town was founded. Under those circumstances, the community created the Yashio Festival to establish the culture of our town and make it a true “hometown”.
