Shinagawa Tourism Association Recommendations Vol. 4
Strolling through Shinagawa’s Kyu-Tokaido and Its Architecture (Part 1)

Shinagawa-shuku was one of the fifty-three post stations on the Old Tokaido Road. Shinagawa has prospered as a port town since the Middle Ages. During the Edo Period (1603–1868) the area also became a busy lodging town. Old structures such as temples and shrines as well as examples of billboard architecture (false fronts of buildings done in a Western style) remain along the street, reminding visitors of the lifestyle and culture of the people of old Shinagawa.
