Strolling through Shinagawa’s Kyu-Tokaido and Its Architecture (Part 2)

Shinagawa-shuku has prospered as a port town since the Middle Ages, during the Edo Period (1603–1868) it was the most popular post town among the fifty-three post stations on the Old Tokaido. Old structures such as temples and shrines as well as examples of billboard architecture (false fronts of buildings done in a Western style) remain along the street, reminding visitors of the lifestyle and culture of the people of old Shinagawa.

Kitabamba-dori Signboard Architecture

You can see unique signboard architecture richly decorated with copper plates and tiles.

Location: Kita-Shinagawa

Kaitokuji Temple

There are many sights here, including the elaborate carvings under the eaves, the Buddha’s birth statue in front of the main hall, and the small warehouse on the side of the approach to the temple.

Showa Neon Takamura Signboard Museum

Showa Neon, which handles outdoor advertising and neon signs, was founded as Takamura Signboard Store in 1922. The company’s museum is located on the 2nd floor of its head office in Shinagawa, and exhibits various collection items.

Location: 1-7-17 Minami-Shinagawa
Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays)
Fee: Free

Japanese Tea Café “Chabako”

This place was a barber shop before being reborn as a café. You can enjoy selected Japanese tea and Japanese sweets with a gentle sweetness here.

Location: 2-11-5 Minami-Shinagawa
Hours: 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (closed on Mondays)
Note: For the time being, the cafe is open only on Saturdays and Sundays (as of the end of October).


MAP 5

Matsuoka Tatami Store

Matsuoka Tatami Store was established in the early Taisho Era (1912–26), and has the warmth of a wooden structure. Its second floor is structured as a low mezzanine.

Location: 2-8-25 Minami-Shinagawa



Shinagawa-shuku Communication Center

This is a town development base and information center designed to be a venue where community residents can have friendly exchanges with people visiting Shinagawa-shuku.

Location: 2-28-19 Kita-Shinagawa
Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed on Mondays and during the yearend/New Year’s holidays)



TOIYABA

The tourist information center for visitors located within the Guesthouse Shinagawa-shuku.

Location: 1-22-16 Kita-Shinagawa
Hours: 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. (This shortened hours are in place until further notice.)
Languages: Japanese and English

Note: The multi-language pamphlets are available. Please make use of them for strolling through the city.
