Shinagawa – History Tours Vol.1

Omori Shell Mounds Garden and Oi Course

This fiscal year, we will introduce the history and culture of Shinagawa City through a series entitled Shinagawa History Tours. The first entry will be a course that takes you through historical sites around Oi.

Omori Shell Mounds Garden

This park preserves and maintains the Omori Shell Mounds, a national historic site that is considered to be the birthplace of Japanese archaeology. Shell mounds are places where ancient people discarded their trash. Many different items such as stone tools, shells, animal bones and earthenware have been found at the Omori Shell Mounds.

Hours:9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Note: Until 6:00 p.m. in July and August, and until 4:00 p.m. from November through February

Kashima-Jinja Shrine

The shrine’s expansive grounds are covered with trees, including two bay trees and a Japanese evergreen oak that are all estimated to be over 150 years old. These trees have been designated as Shinagawa City natural monuments.

Shinagawa Historical Museum

The Shinagawa Historical Museum introduces the city’s history and culture. It reopened on April 21 after major renovations. The museum’s new exhibition hall presents Shinagawa’s past in an easy-to-understand manner using historical documents, large dioramas and videos.

Ito Hirobumi Gravesite

This is the final resting place of Japan’s first prime minister, Ito Hirobumi, and his wife Umeko. The gravesite is characterized by an approximately two-meter-high cylindrical tomb and a torii gate. While usually closed to the public, the site is open to the public in early November each year, along with Shinagawa City’s other Designated Cultural Properties.

Let’s check out some of Shinagawa Historical Museum’s cultural properties!


Spouted Vessel (reproduction)

This is an exact replica of an earthenware vessel found at the Omori Shell Mounds in 1877. While spouted vessels are commonly found from Hokkaido to Tohoku, the Omori Shell Mounds is the southernmost place where they have been discovered.


■ Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (the entrance closes at 4:30 p.m.).
■ Closed: Mondays (or the next weekday if Monday is a national holiday) and during the yearend/New Year’s holidays.
■ Admission: 100 yen
(50 yen for elementary and junior high school students)
Note: Admission is free for elementary and junior high school students residing in or enrolled in a school in Shinagawa, people over the age of seventy, and people with disabilities.
