irises
(ayame/hanashobu)
Although
they bloom for about three weeks from the beginning of June,
irises are known as the flower for Boy's Day (May 5),
nowadays called Children's Day. Boys take baths in water strewn with iris
leaves. Shobu in another kanji of Chinese character means victory or defeat
and the spiky leaves, which do have medicinal properties,
are said to fend off evil spirits and disease.
